The museum building dates back to 1946, but it had to be reconstructed in the 1960s after being damaged by the 1960 earthquake. This was made possible by a donation made by the government of Mexico. In 2013, the adjoining Municipal Library of Osorno was moved, therefore, in 2014, the museum was extended, after merging both buildings. A new reconstruction process is slated, which will include the facilities and the facade, as well as the addition of new exhibition rooms, study rooms, and projection theaters.
